Which Diet Fitness Software is Best?

Although my company’s diet fitness software is one of the most popular today, I don’t claim it’s the best for you. That depends on a lot of factors. Here’s what to watch when you’re shopping:

General Approach

Good diet fitness software takes a diary approach: You log your meals and physical activities each day, and the program keeps track of your net intake of calories and other nutrients and how this compares with your budget and the Recommended Dietary Allowances for your age, sex, size, and reproductive state. The program should also deposit uneaten calories in a “bank” that you can draw on later for extra eating.

It should also let you log meals on future dates and show you their calorie and nutrient makeup, so that you can use these as menus.

Food Data

Make sure the software you’re evaluating covers at least 20,000 foods, including fast foods or ethnic foods, if those are of special interest to you. In addition, it should cover at least the 13 nutrients required on food labels -- and better yet, 20 or 30 more.

Your Goal Weight is the weight you want to achieve. (If it's a lot different from your current weight, you might want to set a goal that represents only the first step. Even a 10-percent weight loss will significantly improve your health.)
Close Target Date
Plan on losing no more than a pound or two per week.  Otherwise, you may eat too little for good nutrition and your weight loss may be temporary.
Close Lactating?
If you are breastfeeding, check this box and the calculator will add calories for producing milk.
Close Tobacco User?
Nicotine speeds your metabolism, making you burn calories faster. (That's why people who quit smoking gain weight.) Check this box if you average more than one cigarette, one-half pipeful, one-quarter of a cigar, or one dip of snuff or chewing tobacco per day.

The best diet fitness software not only tracks the number of calories you burn in exercise, but includes a rich variety of exercises (and exercise machines) in its database, ranging from sports and leisure activities to occupational and household tasks. It also factors your calorie burn for your body weight and the speed and intensity of your workout.

A few programs do a lot more than what I’ve described above.
