Most Accurate Calorie Count Egg

By Terry Dunkle*

“Calorie count egg” will find you hundreds of websites and software programs promising to show you the calorie content of eggs. The most accurate are those used by dieters and other people who closely monitor their nutrition. Here are five factors to consider when choosing such a tool:

Food Selection

The best place to search calorie-lookup tools are those that cover at least 20,000 foods. That’s a sure sign that it’s a serious tool for nutrition lookups. (Make sure it isn’t inflating its figures by listing duplicate foods under different names.)

Accuracy of Data

Steer clear of any calorie count list that allows users to contribute foods for public use. User contributions are notoriously inaccurate.

Ask how often the data are updated. Some lists are large, but many years old.

Based on 20 years of research by DietPower, Inc., this calculator is accurate to 5 percent for most users. (It's not for people who are pregnant or have metabolic disorders. Always see a doctor before starting a diet.)

Close Goal Weight
Your Goal Weight is the weight you want to achieve. (If it's a lot different from your current weight, you might want to set a goal that represents only the first step. Even a 10-percent weight loss will significantly improve your health.)
Close Target Date
Plan on losing no more than a pound or two per week.  Otherwise, you may eat too little for good nutrition and your weight loss may be temporary.
Close Lactating?
If you are breastfeeding, check this box and the calculator will add calories for producing milk.
Close Tobacco User?
Nicotine speeds your metabolism, making you burn calories faster. (That's why people who quit smoking gain weight.) Check this box if you average more than one cigarette, one-half pipeful, one-quarter of a cigar, or one dip of snuff or chewing tobacco per day.

Search Speed

If “calorie count egg” finds you a lot of duplicates, beware -- the database you are searching probably allows users to contribute foods by keying in facts from the labels. Such collections are often inaccurate.

In addition, check the date when the database was last revised. For a generic food such as eggs, it should have been updated at least once every two years.

Extras

The best lookup tools show you not only calories, but other nutrients. Look for one that displays at least the 12 “label” nutrients -- or better yet, one that covers those and 20 or 30 others.

Guarantees

Don’t pay for a calorie counter without making sure it offers a money-back guarantee for at least 30 days. (DietPower, advertised on this page, has a one-year guarantee.)
